Incredible India
Tourism is a major industry & the India Tourism Ministry launched a
campaign to promote Incredible India as a tourist destination in 2002. The
campaign projected India as an attractive tourist destination by showcasing
different aspects of Indian culture and history like yoga, spirituality, etc.
The campaign was conducted globally and received appreciation from tourism
industry observers and travelers alike. However, the campaign also came in for
criticism from some quarters. Some observers felt that it had failed to cover
several aspects of India which would have been attractive to the average
tourist.
In 2009, the Ministry of Incredible India Tourism launched a campaign targeted at the local
population to educate them regarding good behaviour and etiquette when dealing
with foreign tourists. Indian actor Aamir Khan was comissioned to endorse the
campaign which was titled 'Atiti Devo Bhava', sanskrit for 'Guests are like
God'. Atithi Devo Bhava aimed at creating awareness about the effects of tourism
and sensitizing the local population about preservation of India's heritage,
culture, cleanliness and hospitality. It also attempted to re-instil a sense of
responsibility towards tourists and re-enforce the confidence of foreign
tourists towards India as a preferred holiday destination. The concept was
designed to complement the ‘Incredible India’ Campaign.
Atithi devo bhavah - 'The guest is God' or 'Guest become God' is a Sanskrit
verse, taken from an ancient Hindu scripture which became part of the "code of
conduct" for Hindu society. Atithi devo bhav regards a procedure of the
Host-Guest relationship. Recently it has also become the tag line of India's
Ministry of Tourism's campaign to improve the treatment of tourists in India.
'Atithi Devo Bhavah' is a Social Awareness Campaign aimed at providing the
inbound tourist a greater sense of being welcomed to the country. The campaign
targets the general public, while focusing mainly on the stakeholders of the
tourism industry. The campaign provides training and orientation to taxi
drivers, guides, immigration officers, police and other personnel who interact
directly with the tourist.
